HOW TO BECOME A FULL TIME PLUS SIZE MODEL

Plus size models are simply models that range from a size 12 upwards. Plus size modelling is gradually gaining grounds all over the world unlike in the past when you only saw skinny models on fashion runways or in adverts and commercials.
There is no fashion show that you would attend these days without seeing at least one plus size designer and some plus size models on the runway.
It is actually a large, diverse and interesting industry and is bound to be lucrative because people are beginning to have an open mind and accept this industry because obviously, it has come to stay.

Do you aspire to be a plus size model? Then this article is for you. To become a plus size model:

1.  YOU HAVE TO BE CONFIDENT:You cannot become a plus size model if you are not bold and confident. You have to first of all work on your inside. Grow above any insecurity you may feel about your body or at least act like you are confident. The more confident you act, the more confident you become. This is important because we live in a very harsh and judgmental world. People would judge you and throw careless words at you to make you feel low because of how you look. Most times, it is actually because of their own personal issues. You have to be tough to become a plus size model. Just imagine a scenario where you are walking on a runway and someone from the audience laughs at you and calls you "fatty", how would you react? Or imagine you post a picture of yourself on social media wearing a bikini or in your underwear and someone makes a nasty comment on the picture, how would you react in that situation? The bottom line is plus size modelling is not for the faint-hearted.

2. YOU HAVE TO BE SMART, PROACTIVE AND CREATIVE: As a model or an aspiring model, you cannot afford to be laid back about your career as someone that wants to grow in the industry. You need to take initiative once in a while especially if you are not yet under any agency or management. This is the information age so it even makes things easier. You can open a page on Facebook or Instagram primarily dedicated to your modelling career and gather followers and likes. You can even have a professional website for your modelling career. You can organize or participate in shoots especially campaign photoshoots to promote your career. You should be on the look out for jobs and brands that need plus size models.

3. YOU NEED TO GROOM YOURSELF: You cannot say you are a model if you do not walk like a model, look like a model or act like a model. You have to practice your walk at least 3 times a week or more depending on your stamina. You need to take care of your body. You hair should always look neat. Your nails also should be kept clean. Your skin is a priority. Look for good and affordable products to use on your skin to make it shine and glow. Take care of your teeth. You can whiten it or use a whitening toothpaste to give yourself a brighter smile because your teeth is your selling point as a model. Work also on your physique. This doesn't mean you should necessarily lose weight. NO. You are already a plus size lady. You just need to look fit especially around your waist and tummy area. Eat right, exercise once in a while and dance if you can. Also, make sure you always shave off or wax off any body hair especially if you are the hairy type. Also, it is important for you to have at least a pair of runway or modelling heels. It could be preferably in black. Your modelling underwear should also be either black or nude colour.

4. PREPARE A PORTFOLIO: As a model, it is important that you have a portfolio. Your portfolio is like your resume for you to source for jobs as a model. It doesn't have to contain too many pictures. You should just have some basic model poses in it. You can have a close-up picture from your head to your shoulders, a full head to toe picture, a sitting position studio shot, a side pose shot and even pictures of you on a runway if you have done any runway jobs. You could also include a picture of you in a natural state with no makeup and natural hair, a semi-nude or fully nude picture if you are bold enough or a picture of yourself in a bikini, lingerie or any other nice outfit. Just make sure your portfolio contains a variety of nice pictures that would be good enough to impress your clients. Your portfolio should also contain your statistics which is the accurate and exact measurements of your bust, waist and hips. It could contain your dress, bra and shoe sizes also. Your contact numbers and email address could also be included.

5. YOU CAN BRANCH INTO OTHER RELATED CAREERS: Most models always have something else doing to add to their resume because sometimes modelling alone is just not enough. It could be acting, singing, anchoring, ushering, being a TV or on air personality etc. You are still going to be in the entertainment industry because they all go hand in hand. Some people even participate in beauty pageants and modelling competitions and launch a career from there whether they win or not. There are many shows and competitions these days that help to groom and mould models, just be on the look out for them. There are even modelling academies and schools. The opportunities are endless. Also try to be active on social media. Post your pictures and tag popular plus size brands and agencies. You may just get lucky and be noticed by a scout and get signed up. Just be smart.

6.  FOLLOW FAMOUS PLUS SIZE MODELS AND BRANDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Like I said before, be active on social media. You need to fully harness the power of the internet. Follow the activities of some popular plus size models on Instagram or Facebook like Ashley Graham, Tess Halliday etc and popular plus size brands. They are already what you aspire to be so you have nothing to lose but everything to gain.

7. BE FOCUSED, DILIGENT AND CONSISTENT: You cannot achieve anything worthwhile in this life without passing through some hurdles. You have to be focused, disciplined, hardworking and persevering if you want to become a plus size model. The modelling industry is a tough one especially for plus size models. You have to be strong and persistent. Don't give up easily. Have integrity. Don't do something you would end up not feeling proud about later because you want to become a model. Be principled, down-to-earth and open to learning new things. There is no end to learning in life.

That is all about how to become a plus size model. I wish you all the best in your plus size modelling career.
