Hi guys! Our face of Koosh Kurves for this week is a bold, beautiful and fabulous plus size model. She is a perfect combination of beauty and brains because she is also a writer and a blogger. Let us get to know more about her.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Onyinye Agbakuru. I am 24 years old. I was born on the 8th of May. I am a plus size model, a blogger, a writer and a body positivity and plus size/curvy life advocate. I am from Imo state and a proud Nigerian obviously. I am a christian and I am the last born and only girl in a family of 5.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I attended Command Day Secondary School, Ikeja, Lagos. I am also a graduate of Linguistics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

YOUR BODY POSITIVITY/BODY ACCEPTANCE STORY

Growing up for me was quite uneventful. I was a very quiet child but brilliant. There was of course the occasional name-calling and teasing normally experienced by big people but I got over it after a while and stopped allowing it get to me. I once had a slim friend that started modelling way before I did. I asked her one day to give me connections to start modelling but she said I had to slim down first. That gave me the impression that I could never become a model so I gave up. I had not yet discovered that there was anything like plus size modelling then. I can say that I fully accepted myself and my size sometime in 2015 when I found out about plus size modelling and decided to start modelling as a plus size model after graduating from the university. I signed up under a popular plus size modelling agency that I really don't want to mention because I am no longer with them. They trained and groomed me and gave me my first plus size modelling experience and I have not looked back since then. I have done several runway jobs and photo shoots and I still have many plans of promoting body positivity and body acceptance through my personal story, projects and experiences so watch out for me.

YOUR OPINION ON THE STATE OF THE PLUS SIZE INDUSTRY HOME AND ABROAD

We still have a long way to go in Africa, especially in Nigeria. We need a re-orientation. Plus size people and the plus size industry are gaining more grounds in other parts of the world but here in Africa, we are still struggling to accept this culture. It should actually be the other way around because we have more full-figured and voluptuous women here in Africa and Nigeria but we still aim to look skinny like the westerners. The plus size industry has come to stay. There is no going back. We need to see more plus size women on fashion runways, on tv shows,in commercials and Ads, in movies, in the music industry. We should saturate the entertainment industry which is an industry that is naturally biased against plus size people. Big is the new beautiful. Let us grow up and fully accept this new culture because we are going nowhere.
